Liverpool · Refrigerated transport

In Liverpool, we deliver your chilled and frozen products before opening time, as far as Wirral.

Wholesalers, central kitchens and food producers in the Liverpool City Region prepare their orders during the night. Our partner couriers in Liverpool load them as production ends or as soon as your wholesaler has prepared yours, chilled or frozen, then deliver to restaurants, caterers, shops and supermarkets, from the centre to Wirral, before they open their doors.

Our refrigerated rounds in Liverpool

Three Liverpool constraints set the timing of a refrigerated round

On a Saturday, we collect from the Electric Avenue wholesale market before 9am

The council’s wholesale market on Electric Avenue opens at 4am Monday to Saturday, but closes at 9am on a Saturday instead of midday. When your wholesaler prepares your order there, the Saturday round therefore collects it earlier than on weekdays, before closing, then delivers to your customers before they open to the public.

A night round gains no shortcut through Lime Street or a bus lane

Empty streets at night do not open those routes: Lime Street, from London Road, stays closed day and night except to deliver there, and a bus lane whose sign shows no hours is reserved 24 hours a day. Our planning algorithms therefore work out the night route and the time of each stop without them.

We deliver to shops in the pedestrian zone within its delivery hours

Our round arrives in the pedestrian zone within its delivery hours, since the council’s access permit is for works vehicles only and is not issued for a delivery. If your restaurant or shop has no one there yet to take delivery at that time, the courier drops off your products with the codes or keys you entrust to us.

How we work

We bring the vehicle to temperature before loading, and our team follows your deliveries every day from 6am to 10pm

A refrigerated round in Liverpool starts when your production ends or when your wholesaler has prepared your order, at the Electric Avenue market for example, which opens at 4am, and ends when your customers open to the public. In between, we deliver to each customer in the delivery window allowed at their address, whether that is a shop in the pedestrian zone or a supermarket on the Wirral, and our planning algorithms set the order of the stops and the crossing under the Mersey.

Before the first round, we agree the temperature range, the packaging and each customer’s delivery instructions with you. The refrigerated vehicle is reserved for your goods and set to their temperature range, and we bring it to temperature before loading: our partner arrives with a body already cold at the time your production ends or your wholesaler has prepared your order, loads, then goes from your central kitchen or your warehouse to your customers without stopping at a depot. It is almost always a round, often a night delivery. Vehicles, temperatures and logging are set out on the page for our refrigerated transport, which makes up most of our work.

When a handover does not go to plan, our team deals with it

A customer who is out, a street closed for roadworks: our team agrees the next step with the courier while your products stay cold, then keeps you informed. You do not have to call each of your customers to find out whether their order has arrived. Our team follows your deliveries every day from 6am to 10pm.

Who hands us their chilled and frozen products in Liverpool

  • Food wholesalers who load at night to supply restaurants in the centre, then supermarkets in Sefton, Knowsley or St Helens.
  • Central kitchens and caterers who supply canteens, restaurants and shops on both sides of the Mersey.
  • Retailers who want their fresh products on the shelves before they open to the public.

For shipments that do not need to be kept cold, our same-day delivery in Liverpool hands them over within the day, across the six council areas of the City Region.

The service

What our refrigerated transport includes

These three commitments are the same everywhere we deliver. In Liverpool, we organise them around night collections, the pedestrian zone and the crossings of the Mersey.

Refrigerated transport starts before departure

Pre-cooling the vehicle, temperature at loading, handling instructions: our team agrees the necessary precautions with you and passes them on to the transport partners.

On your regular refrigerated rounds, data loggers track temperatures during transport. If there is a deviation or anything unexpected, our team coordinates the response with the carrier and keeps you informed.

The unexpected should not disrupt your business

A carrier unavailable, a vehicle off the road or a rise in orders? The Shippr team finds a replacement that meets your temperature requirements and adjusts the organisation of your rounds.

We coordinate the changes with the partners and let you know the new times, to limit the impact on your supply and your customers.

Frequently asked questions

What you ask us about a refrigerated round in Liverpool

At what temperature do my products travel?

Between 0 and 4 °C, or between 0 and 7 °C depending on the goods, for chilled; at −20 °C for frozen. We agree the range with you before the first round, and on a regular round, a data logger records the temperature continuously and alerts you to any deviation.

Can you collect my order from the wholesale market on a Saturday?

Yes, but earlier than on weekdays. The Electric Avenue market opens at 4am every day from Monday to Saturday, and closes at 9am on a Saturday instead of midday. Tell us when you book what time your wholesaler prepares the order, and we set the collection accordingly.

Do you deliver my frozen goods to Wirral the same night?

Yes. The courier goes under the Mersey by Queensway or Kingsway, and we place the Wirral stop in the night so that your customer there is delivered before opening, like those in Liverpool. Your products stay in the body at temperature during the crossing, all the way to Birkenhead or Wallasey.

Can a refrigerated lorry over 3.5 t go under the Mersey to deliver to my Wirral customers?

Yes, when the volume calls for it, though it is not guaranteed: we tell you when we quote whether a lorry that size can run your round. We build the crossing through the Mersey tunnels into the round, as for a van.

Does a diesel refrigerated vehicle pay an emissions charge in Liverpool?

No. Liverpool has no Clean Air Zone, and the City Council has ruled out the charging option. No vehicle is charged for its emissions: we can therefore deliver in the city with a diesel refrigerated vehicle, by night as well as by day.

Do you have a refrigerated round to set up in Liverpool?

Tell us what you carry, at what temperature, where your products start from, which side of the Mersey your customers are on and when each one takes delivery. We will come back with a proposed vehicle, the order of the stops and the time of each handover.
