Delivery · Newcastle

In Newcastle, we deliver to your customers across the seven council areas of the North East.

Our partner couriers in Newcastle load your goods at your warehouse, central kitchen, wholesaler or shop, then hand them over to your customers on both banks of the Tyne, from Sunderland to County Durham and up into Northumberland.

In the centre, three rules decide the vehicle and the time of most deliveries: the Clean Air Zone, which charges non-compliant vans at any hour (diesel below Euro 6, petrol below Euro 4), the bus lanes, and the pedestrian zones, where a vehicle cannot stop during the hours shown at their entrance. When you book, we place each handover in the window those rules allow at your customer’s address, and we tell you straight away when that window cannot be kept.

Newcastle’s rules

What Newcastle and Gateshead councils require of delivery vehicles

A non-compliant van pays £12.50 a day in the Clean Air Zone

Since 30 January 2023, a Class C Clean Air Zone has covered most of Newcastle city centre. A diesel van that does not meet Euro 6, or a petrol one below Euro 4, pays £12.50 a day there; an HGV, £50; a private car, nothing. For your deliveries in the zone, we book a compliant vehicle, and you are never charged that fee.

Our algorithms choose, for each round, between the bridges and the tunnels under the Tyne

To cross from one bank to the other, a van takes one of the Tyne, Swing, High Level and Redheugh bridges in the centre, or the Tyne Tunnels further east. Our planning and routing algorithms pick, for each round, the crossing that keeps every stop’s handover time, and that is the time we give you when you book.

Our couriers stay out of the bus lanes, and the time we give you allows for it

Bus lanes in Newcastle operate at different times, typically 24 hours a day or 7am to 7pm, seven days a week; where no times are shown, the lane is in force 24 hours a day, bank holidays and Christmas Day included. During its hours, it is reserved for buses and, depending on the lane, a few other vehicles (taxis, private hire vehicles, motorcycles and cycles, goods vehicles over 7.5 t), but not for a van without written authorisation from the council. A contravention costs £70, reduced to £35 within 21 days. Our couriers stay out of the lane and queue in the general traffic lane, route around bus gates and bus-only streets, and the handover time we give you takes both into account.

We deliver to an address in a pedestrian zone outside the hours shown at its entrance

Each pedestrian zone shows its hours at the entrance, and a vehicle that stops there during those hours without a dispensation gets a penalty. A dispensation costs £30 per vehicle and must be requested at least 3 working days in advance. So we place the handover before or after those hours, and if that is not possible, we tell you when you book.

Local rules checked in October 2026.

Newcastle and Gateshead

We plan every route around the rules of central Newcastle

To deliver in central Newcastle, we plan the route and the time of each stop before the courier sets off. The Clean Air Zone covers most of the city centre and the routes over the four bridges that link it to Gateshead; some bus lanes are reserved day and night; a vehicle can stop in a pedestrian zone only outside the hours shown at its entrance. Around the centre, the seven North East council areas stretch from the North Tyneside coast to the villages of County Durham.

Your goods go from your site to your customers in a vehicle that carries nothing else

Every delivery is dedicated: the vehicle leaves your collection point and goes straight to your recipients, with no depot or sorting centre in between. If your warehouse is in Gateshead and your customers are north of the Tyne, the courier crosses the river at least once per round: we then choose between a bridge in the centre, inside the Clean Air Zone, and the tolled Tyne Tunnels, depending on when each customer must be delivered.

A job almost always has several addresses. We link them into a round whose order follows the hours when a vehicle can stop in each pedestrian zone and the best crossing of the Tyne. That is how our same-day delivery works, with a van from 5 m³ or a truck over 20 m³ for a large load.

Our couriers collect your products at night, from your wholesaler or your central kitchen

Refrigerated transport, chilled and frozen, is most of our work. Central kitchens finish production during the night, and the restaurants, shops and supermarkets of these seven council areas want their chilled and frozen products before they open. We collect the order at night or before dawn, as soon as it is ready, and our night deliveries hand it over before opening to the public. The Clean Air Zone charges at night as it does by day: the refrigerated vehicle we book is compliant with it.

Our team follows the delivery and makes the calls for you

The courier is held up out of a bus lane, a bus gate forces a detour, a pedestrian zone is not yet open to vehicles, a customer does not answer: our team tells the recipient the new time, reaches the courier and calls you when a decision is yours to make. You no longer have to call each customer or ring the courier back during the round. Our team follows your deliveries every day from 6am to 10pm.

We also take deliveries between Newcastle and another region: a truck leaving a County Durham warehouse for a customer elsewhere in the country, or a van bringing stock from another site to your Newcastle shops. Shippr has delivered in the UK since 2023.

What we do in Newcastle

Two services have their own Newcastle page, and our whole offer works here

We deliver the same day in the centre, timing each handover around the bus lanes and the pedestrian zones’ hours; our refrigerated rounds leave at night and cross the Clean Air Zone, which charges at any hour. Our other services work in Newcastle as they do in our other cities.

Frequently asked questions

What you ask us before having goods delivered in Newcastle

Do you deliver to Sunderland, County Durham or Northumberland?

Yes. We cover the seven North East council areas: County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside and Sunderland. Beyond them, we deliver everywhere in the United Kingdom.

Do I have to pay the Clean Air Zone charge when you deliver to my customers in the centre?

No. In the Newcastle and Gateshead zone, a non-compliant van pays £12.50 a day, midnight to midnight, to be paid by the end of the 6th day after the journey; after that, a £120 penalty is added, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days.

For your deliveries, we book a compliant vehicle: you have no charge to pay and no journey to declare.

My customer is in a pedestrian zone: can you deliver to them?

Yes, outside the hours shown at the entrance of the zone, during which a vehicle cannot stop there. Give us the address when you book: we set the handover time around those hours, or we tell you straight away that it does not fit the window.

Can a van use a bus lane to save time?

No. During their hours, Newcastle’s bus lanes are reserved for buses; some are also open to taxis, private hire vehicles, motorcycles, cycles and vehicles authorised in writing by the council, a few to goods vehicles over 7.5 t; a van goes in only with written authorisation from the council. Our couriers stay in the general traffic lane, and where a bus gate or bus-only street closes the way, they route around it; the time we give you allows for both.
