Refrigerated in Norwich

What Norwich’s traffic rules change for a refrigerated round before dawn

We deliver to your customers on pedestrianised streets before unloading is banned there

On the pedestrianised streets of the centre, unloading is banned for part of the day. For a restaurant or a shop on one of them, we place its stop early in the night round, while the courier can still unload, and order your other customers around it. When the end of your production leaves no time to get there, you find out as soon as you book, before the courier loads.

We calculate the night round’s arrival times with the 20 mph limit in Thorpe Hamlet and Crome

Since 16 February 2026, a Norfolk County Council order has limited speed to 20 mph on roads in the Thorpe Hamlet and Crome divisions, east of the centre. The limit also applies at night: the courier drives at 20 mph on those roads even when they are empty before dawn. Our planning and routing tools allow for that limit for every customer in those areas, and the arrival time we give a restaurant that opens early is one the courier can keep.

Even at night, our couriers avoid the Dereham Road bus and cycle gate

Since 20 October 2025, in Costessey, west of the city, a bus and cycle gate has closed Old Dereham Road towards Three Mile Lane and a stretch of Dereham Road to all other vehicles, 24 hours a day. A night round may not use it any more than a daytime one. When the journey to a Costessey customer would go through that gate, the courier takes another route, and we give your customer the arrival time worked out on that route.

Local rules checked in October 2026.

How we work

Before opening time, our couriers in Norwich let themselves in with your codes or keys to drop off your goods

A refrigerated round in Norwich is built around two times: when your production is ready and when each of your customers opens. In between, we plan a route along streets open to delivery vehicles, and we place each customer on a pedestrianised street within the window when the courier can unload. Norwich has no Clean Air Zone, and the city’s only low emission zone, on Castle Meadow, applies to buses and taxis.

We first agree with you on the packaging, the temperature range of each product and the time each customer accepts a delivery. The courier switches on their refrigeration unit before reaching your site, and loads when your order is ready, in the middle of the night or at dawn. They are one of our partner couriers in Norwich, chosen for their refrigerated vehicle, which that day is reserved for your goods. As you rarely deliver to a single customer, we organise a round in the order of their opening times, from the city-centre streets to the market towns of Broadland and South Norfolk; for those who take delivery very early, it is a night delivery. Before opening, the courier lets themselves in with the codes or keys you entrust to us and puts the products inside; every handover is recorded, with proof of delivery. From 6am to 10pm, every day, our team monitors the round and calls any customer the courier cannot reach. The full service is described on our refrigerated transport page.

The service

What our refrigerated transport includes

The service is the same from one city to the next. In Norwich, we set it around the pedestrianised streets of the centre, the bus and taxi stretches, and the customers who take delivery before they open.

Refrigerated transport starts before departure

Pre-cooling the vehicle, temperature at loading, handling instructions: our team agrees the necessary precautions with you and passes them on to the transport partners.

On your regular refrigerated rounds, data loggers track temperatures during transport. If there is a deviation or anything unexpected, our team coordinates the response with the carrier and keeps you informed.

The unexpected should not disrupt your business

A carrier unavailable, a vehicle off the road or a rise in orders? The Shippr team finds a replacement that meets your temperature requirements and adjusts the organisation of your rounds.

We coordinate the changes with the partners and let you know the new times, to limit the impact on your supply and your customers.

Frequently asked questions

What you ask us before a refrigerated round in Norwich

At what temperature do my products travel during the round?

Chilled products travel between 0 and 4 °C, or between 0 and 7 °C for those that allow it; frozen goods travel at −20 °C. We bring the refrigerated vehicle to temperature before you load. When your Norwich round runs every night, an on-board logger records the temperature throughout, and we alert you as soon as it leaves the set range.

My central kitchen is in Broadland and my customers are in central Norwich: can you deliver to them before they open?

Yes. The courier collects your products when your production ends, at night or before dawn, and delivers them in the order of your customers’ opening times, starting with those where unloading is banned earliest.

My volumes are more than a van can carry: can you send a refrigerated lorry over 3.5 t?

Yes, it is possible but not guaranteed: when you book, we tell you whether one of our partner couriers can take your round with a refrigerated lorry over 3.5 t.

Do your Norwich customers want their chilled products before they open?

Send us the list of your products and their temperature, the time loading can start and each customer’s opening time. In return, you know which refrigerated vehicle will come, when the courier loads at your site and what time they reach each customer.
