Cold chain, between the Singel and the port

Three Antwerp rules that shape a refrigerated round

The Singel, edge of the LEZ

Refrigeration units still mostly run on diesel, and the LEZ covering the inner city and the Left Bank now admits a Euro 4 diesel only with a day pass, twelve days a year at most. The refrigerated vans we book are allowed in: the cold chain crosses the Singel with no pass.

At night, at your suppliers

A central kitchen finishes its run as the city goes to sleep, and a wholesaler loads its orders overnight. That is when we collect, to reach restaurants, shops and supermarkets before they open to the public.

The morning window

In the city-centre pedestrian zones, vehicles deliver only in the morning, until 11am, and in the evening around the Meir. That is also when restaurants and shops take deliveries: we build your refrigerated rounds so the last drop lands before the window closes.

Local rules checked in October 2026.

How we run it

Cold set the day before, the round timed to the hour

Refrigerated transport in Antwerp is prepared the day before. The vehicle has to be allowed into the LEZ, the unit set before loading, and the round timed to two clocks: your customers’, who take deliveries before they open, and the pedestrian zones’, which close to vehicles at 11am.

The day before, we agree with you the packing, the loading temperature, pre-cooling the vehicle and what the driver needs to know at each drop. The Antwerp partner we choose has a vehicle with the load volume your goods need, and a refrigeration unit set to their temperature. Most of these jobs are multi-drop rounds: several restaurants, shops or supermarkets in the order that keeps each one’s slot, often at night. How our refrigerated transport works is set out on the service page.

Who trusts us with their cold chain in Antwerp

  • Food wholesalers with a warehouse in the port or on the outskirts, serving the city.
  • Central kitchens, restaurants and caterers stocking their outlets or their business customers.
  • Pharmacies, labs and healthcare wholesalers, for whom a temperature excursion is a straight loss.

Nothing to keep cold? Same-day delivery in Antwerp is organised the same way.

The service

Our refrigerated transport, point by point

The service is the same in all our cities. In Antwerp it is built around the LEZ, night collections and the morning window.

Cold-chain expertise

Refrigerated transport starts before departure

Pre-cooling the vehicle, temperature at loading, handling instructions: our team agrees the necessary precautions with you and passes them on to the transport partners.

On your regular refrigerated rounds, data loggers track temperatures during transport. If there is a deviation or anything unexpected, our team coordinates the response with the carrier and keeps you informed.

The right vehicle, from chilled to frozen

Crates, boxes or pallets: Shippr brings in equipped partners for your volumes and your temperature needs, from 0–4 °C to 0–7 °C, or −20 °C for your frozen products.

One-off delivery or a round between your stores, shops and restaurants: we adapt the transport capacity, the frequency of stops and the loading arrangements to the way you work.

The unexpected should not disrupt your business

A carrier unavailable, a vehicle off the road or a rise in orders? The Shippr team finds a replacement that meets your temperature requirements and adjusts the organisation of your rounds.

We coordinate the changes with the partners and let you know the new times, to limit the impact on your supply and your customers.

Frequently asked questions

Cold chain in Antwerp: what we are asked before a first round

Do you handle both chilled and frozen goods in Antwerp?

Yes, both. Chilled covers fresh goods, from 0–4 °C to 0–7 °C depending on the product; frozen holds at −20 °C. The Antwerp partner we choose has the refrigeration unit it takes.

Can a diesel refrigerated van enter Antwerp’s LEZ?

Yes, if it is at least Euro 5. A Euro 4 diesel gets in only with a day pass, and a haulier can no longer buy paid access instead. Any refrigerated van we book for an address inside the zone meets that bar.

Can you deliver before restaurants and shops open?

Yes. Collection after production or from the wholesaler, an overnight or dawn round, handover before opening time: that is the most common shape of our refrigerated rounds.

How do I know the cold held for the whole round?

Loggers on board your regular rounds record the temperature from start to finish. If it leaves the range, our team tells you and agrees the next step with the partner.

A refrigerated round to set up in Antwerp?

Tell us what you carry, at what temperature, and when your customers take deliveries. We come back with the vehicle and the order of stops.
